Imagine working in an organization where people say what they mean and mean what they say; an organization where you can be honest with your coworkers from the top to the bottom. Imagine a place where you can give and receive constructive criticism without ego getting in the way and make snarky jokes without worrying that people will be offended.
This is what it’s like to work at a company that values open and real communication. While I certainly connect with the other values — I’d better or I’m in the wrong place — this is one value that has always resonated with me. There are plenty of people in the world for whom open and real communication is simply uncomfortable, but real and open is the way I live my life. And it’s not hard to tell that many of the people I work with also live their lives similarly.
In contrast to organizations where you have to be careful what you say, lest your words be twisted and used against you, at Infusionsoft, the openness makes for approachability. When people are willing to share their knowledge it makes for a very supportive and collaborative environment. On the flip side, they also don’t hesitate to ask tough questions and be honest when they think something could be done better. As far as I’m concerned, the constructive feedback is just as important as the collaborative environment. If we are to innovate and constantly improve (as another of our core values says), we can’t just walk around giving out high-fives for a job well done, we must be unafraid to hear and be the voice of reasonable dissent.
It’s refreshing, to be in such a place and be surrounded by people who value communication and collaboration as much as I do. It’s also noisy and sometimes the discussions can get tense when two people are passionate about the way they want to do things. But in the end, we all work for the good of the company and ensuring a great experience for our customers.
